Meet Our Team

Dr. Patty’s staff is more a family than an office staff … in fact, some of us have been with her since the very beginning of the practice! We value our patients as our friends and will make you feel at home from the very first phone call. We have a lot of fun seeing many of our patients and their families outside the office when we’re involved at local community events, and have a reputation for making the best balloon animals around.  We love children and make learning the importance of taking care of their teeth fun! Of course, we love working with parents and grandparents, too, and we’d like to introduce ourselves. Come say hi!

Our office is located at 200 Lindenwood Drive in historic Linden, MI.

No Need To Get All Choked Up!

Do you gag on x- rays? I know I do!  Children can develop a  gag reflex and so can parents.  – Fortunate we can do many things at the dentist  and reduce potential fear of embarrassment.  For example We can use mouth rinses and sprays that dull the sensation  to help the x-ray process. Panoramic e-rays are also available, where no dental film is placed inside the mouth at all.  In worst case scenarios, all x-rays can be taken while the patient sleeps under sedation.

If you or someone you know suffers from a sensitive gag reflex give us a call for an appointment for an initial consultation which learns the needs of the patient  and begin to develop a plan of care so they can experience dental care in comfort!

As your dentist , I hope you will always feel comfortable to tell us how you feel and so we can make you as comfortable as possible .  We have nitrous oxide to make you more relaxed , comfy blankets, music from Pandora where you can pick anything you want,  Netflix where you can watch a show, squishy balls and characters to squeeze on- the gingerbread man is Sarah’s favorite -and if you prefer you can listen to Dr Patty and Sarah hum while we work.  Call us today for the most comfortable appointment ever !

Can I Have Skittles and A Coke- Healthy Snacking

Dr Al Danenberg a nutritional Periodontist, once asked his grandson what makes potato chips so good- he replied that they were crunchy and salty.  But they are over -processed carbohydrates, unhealthy fats and have excessive salt and chemicals and do not have most nutrients!

How can we get crunchier healthy snacks?

Crunching can come from apple slices, celery sticks, cucumber or carrots- they could be dipped into organic peanut butter or organic almond butter or organic coconut butter for added nutrients and taste.

Another crispy choice is Jicama slices.  Jicama is a root vegetable, with the texture of a firm pear and the flavor of a sweet apple- they are great for dipping too!

Candy is just not healthy- it is all sugar with some added chemicals- Try substituting with a handful of nuts, seeds, raisins- they are loaded with good nutrients!

What about something cold?  Ice Cream is loaded with sugar and chemicals: Organic, unsweetened, full-fat yogurt is a healthy substitute- They even have it at Uncle Ray’s Dairy-land

!- Add slices of whole fruit like berries!

Want some thing to drink? – Avoid all sodas- they are all loaded with unhealthy chemicals and acids- Sugar and acids cause tooth decay as well as gut problems.  Artificial sweeteners by themselves can damage healthy bacteria in the gut.  Instead of sodas consider water, teas seltzers that have no chemicals.  If you want to use a sweetener try organic stevia or organic monk fruit (Luo Han Guo)

Snoring Or Really Sleeping?

Did you know that millions of people suffer from OSA-Obstructive Sleep Apnea?  It is estimated that 75% of the population suffer from this- kids as well as adults.  When you think of snoring  you think of older overweight people but children snore too!  I just had a 7 year old  that snored and ground his teeth severely.  Often this is due to how much air they get when they try to sleep.  The grinding is when they are trying to move the jaw forward to help open their airway and they snore because the muscles of the tongue and palate fall back and (in the case of young children-their tonsils and adenoids are large)close off their breathing.  Apnea is when you stop breathing completely and your brain has to wake you up to start breathing again and you don’t even know it is happening.

Treatment depends on how often you stop breathing- A test at night either in a clinic or a special home  test will let the doctor know how to help.  In the  case of the 7 year old I suspected Sleep apnea and referred Mom to the Doctor to check for this – He did have the problem and the solution in this case was to remove the Tonsils and Adenoids to give him room to breathe at night.  He grew 3 inches and did much better in school where he was a behavior problem before.

For an adult The CPAP  machine is the  most effective treatment. It is a forced air treatment .  Some people cannot get used to the machine and in that case a dental appliance that helps move the jaw forward when you sleep will help open  the airway and reduce the number of apneas.   Sleep Apnea can cause heart disease, stroke and heart attacks and they are 3 times more likely to be in a car accident due to daytime sleepiness!

Toothbrush Truths

Your toothbrush can play a big role in your daily routine.  It can keep your teeth healthy and bright.  But a newer, cleaner toothbrush could also play a key part in your overall health.

Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is a great place for harboring bacteria that can make you sick and cause tooth decay and gum disease.

-Don’t share your toothbrush with others!

-Thoroughly rinse your brush after each use to remove any remaining toothpaste and debris.

-Don’t store all the family toothbrushes in one container and don’t share toothpaste with someone who is sick.  You will transfer germs.

-Make sure your toothbrush is dry before placing it inside a toothbrush cover.  Bacteria thrive in warm, moist places.

-Wash your hands before and after brushing if possible – they carry additional forms of bacteria.

-Don’t forget to  replace  your toothbrush every 3-4 months  or when the bristles start to fray.
